One of my most expensive purchases ever for my iPhone has been Grand Theft Auto Chinatown Wars. This game is by no means cheap but man is it fun. I have two other GTA games for my Xbox360 and I had a lot of fun causing all types of mayhem stealing cars, fighting, and just blowing stuff up for no reason other than I could. This GTA is no different and takes me back to the olden days when most games weren’t 3D and were side scrollers or viewed the entire playing area from the sky. GTA is viewed from the sky so to speak and it works pretty well. I’ve played it for at least 30 hours so far and I’m not even 40% complete.
The missions have been pretty diverse although most of them are standard GTA. Delivery something, blow something up, take someone out, etc. The dialogue that appears in the game (through sub titles, no FMV here) is really funny, well at least to me its pretty funny. The controls are all done on the touch screen and it isn’t half bad. It’s just really hard to drive around sometimes or push the right button to make something happen. I’m used to using controllers that have actual buttons not virtual buttons like on the iPhone.
I’ll admit that I dedicate a good amount of my gaming time to my iPhone these days but thats because I can’t take my Xbox360 on the road with me. Well I could but then thats just one more big thing to pack and thats not any fun. Like most games this will take a long time to complete but at least I can play it while on the plane or when I’m in my hotel room. The only thing that gets tedious is all the driving around for objectives, if I could skip this part most of the time I think this game would be top notch but then it would lose some of the “explore” factor that people seem to enjoy of open world environments.
I’m curious to see what the summer will bring since the new iPhone will be out. I hope there are some great games like GTA that come out but that can still run on my 3GS. Maybe if its viable, I’ll pick up an iPad and use that for on the road gaming. Wouldn’t that be super nerdy, iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad all sitting in my bag as I fly through the air for work……
Wow its been a long time since I’ve blogged about anything but things have been busy over the last couple of months so I haven’t had the time or anything to really write about. I do now! Best Buy was kind enough to provide me a $30 coupon from my Best Buy Rewards points and I had another $30 gift card to blow so I decided to pick up Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2. I know I’m a bit late in getting this game and its been reviewed probably 1000000000 times already but I always have to give my own personal take on things.
First off, the graphics are uber awesome. Way better than I expected and quite realistic from my point of view, complete with blood splatter when you nail a bad guy in with a sniper rifle. The game plays much like most first person shooters and since I have the very first Call of Duty game for Xbox 360 it felt pretty much the same from the control stand point. The one thing that stands out a lot is how hard the game is. I’m only a very casual gamer these days (its due to my ever advancing age and lack of time to devote to video games) so my speed in spinning around and killing people in my field of fire is a little slow and my aim is way off when chucking grenades. I can’t count the number of times I’ve died already because its just that intense of a game. Bad guys are coming from everywhere and they’re all trying to kill me and I’m just trying to find cover or reload my weapon.
I must say though I am pleased I picked up this game. It’s supposed to be pretty short for the campaign mode but I don’t mind. I might try playing through the game again at some point once I’m done with it or go back to trying to play Super Mario Brothers Wii since I haven’t touched that in about a month. I am focusing a lot of my time on Grand Theft Auto Chinatown Wars for my iPhone but thats for another blog post. In the mean time, this game will be in the Xbox until it is defeated! Although at my current pace, I’m guessing I’ll finish the game by Christmas 😉
This Christmas I got a new video game for my Wii which is a throw back to a classic, Super Mario Brothers. I would say that I played some of the previous versions of Super Mario Brothers but I was a Sega fan up until the time Sega stopped making game consoles. I have played the original Super Mario as well as a few of the other ones but only sporadically since I didn’t own a Nintendo system until I purchased a GameCube and I only played the Mario Sports games and not any of the platformers.
This new version of Super Mario is pretty fun and it seems to hold pretty close to the old tried and true side scroller that I remember playing many years ago. The difference being is that there are a ton of new power ups (like the one that makes you fly, the penguin suit, and the ice Mario power ups) and the fact that you can play with other people at the same time instead of taking turns. The graphics are top notch in this game and the music is an upgraded version of what was in the original games. The controls are easy to pick up since its like using an old NES controller but now you can spin like a top and what not when you jump by shaking the Wii-mote and you can grab objects as well.
Overall I like this game and I think it is pretty true to its Super Mario roots that I first saw in the early 1980’s. Granted its super frustrating just like the original due to the patterns that have to be learned but thats all part of the fun of the game. So far I’ve been playing the game for 2 days and I’ve only made it to world 3 which is pretty sad. Maybe I’ll make some better progress before I head off to work on Monday.
