Christmas time is here, let the spending begin!

Thanksgiving has come and gone and it’s now time for Christmas. Myself and the family were able to get the tree up in record time by using Black Friday to trim the tree and decorate the house instead of going outside to shop with all the crazy people. Just like in years past we did most of our shopping online to take advantage of our Amazon Prime membership and all the other free shipping deals that were available.

Today being Cyber Monday, some of the online deals are even better than Black Friday. I’m flying out this morning so I can’t take advantage of everything that I see online. Before I took off I did get some Lego’s that were dirt cheap that I can use to play with my daughter and of course it’s also for me to have some fun and relive my youth. I have more things to get but they’ll have to wait until I land. I definitely like shopping on my iPad, it makes it easier to spend my money and I can see all the latest deals using my DealNews app.

The only part I’m bad at is wrapping so I’ll have to get them wrapped by the place I buy them from or have my wife so it for me. Well except for her gifts of course, I can’t her wrapping her own Christmas gift. The hard part about traveling is that I have to ship everything to the house and it will most likely get there when I’m not. I might change the wrapping if it’s cheesy or something but hopefully it will hide what I’m getting the Mrs.

Time to relax for the rest of my flight before I touch down in freezing Chicago for work.

Thanksgiving and Black Friday 2012

It’s the day before Thanksgiving and I’m on day 3 of my staycation. That generally means that I have daddy duty while the Mrs. works during the day. It’s not easy to keep my daughter entertained the entire day and on top of that she’s also sick so it makes things extra interesting. So far all the Thanksgiving ingredients have been purchased between my family and my sister-in-laws. It’s actually my sister-in-laws holiday so she will be making the bird and the ham, we just bring the side items. Traditionally we don’t do turkey day dinner, we do turkey day lunch because it’s way easier. Dinner will consist of leftovers so turkey day won’t be an all day affair like most people.

Friday is the biggest shopping day of the year for us Americans. This is where we can get all the door buster deals and wait in line forever just to get a few bucks off some item we want but not necessarily need. I’m going to try and keep to my tradition of not going out with the crazies and just going during normal business hours. I don’t really intend to go out to buy anything, I just plan to take a nice stroll and escape my house for a few hours. I intend to stay up late on turkey night so I can buy what I want online.

I don’t get Pinterest

Pinterest has been around for a few months and I decided to sign up for an account to see what all the hype was about. According to what I’ve read, you pin stuff to boards that you like on the web and share it with people. I think people are using it to pin things that they would like to buy and there are some analysis reports saying that people that use Pinterest buy more junk. I’ve gone ahead and tried using Pinterest to see if there was something interesting for me to pin or buy. So far I haven’t seen anything that I want to buy but it’s still early. I have found some interesting info graphics though that were worth a glance.

I keep going back to Pinterest once a day to see what the hype is about but so far I don’t see it. I have a lot of junk steady and I don’t see myself adding to the pile except to replace stuff I need to get rid of or to buy some new toys to play with. I guess I’ll keep on looking for a few more days to see if this really catches on with me. I personally prefer being addicted to Flipboard. I think I use that the most out of all my apps besides text messaging and email. It’s my conduit to twitter, Facebook, and all the news I can consume.

Maybe something will take hold or I’ll find more junk to buy for my family or home. Maybe I’ll give Path a try again too but I need the Mrs. to join with me to make it worth while.

Black Friday Avoided

For the first time in a very long time I’ve actually avoided going out on Black Friday to shop.  That doesn’t mean that I avoided going out entirely but I just avoided the shopping craziness that is associated with the day after Thanksgiving.  I used to go every year to get some great bargains on stuff that I needed for my wife or for my home but this year was different, I didn’t need anything really and so I was able to sleep in and let the craziness pass.

I looked online and read about some really crazy stories about people camping out just to get some good deals on PS3’s, TV’s, and other assorted stuff for Christmas.  I also read some of the horror stories where people were fighting over stuff or had it stolen from their cars after putting it away and then went off to other stores to get yet more stuff.  Me personally, my time is more valuable than a few dollars saved on Christmas gifts.  Camping out for hours to get a TV or video game console is just nuts.  It’s almost like waiting days for a movie to come out just to be the first to see it.  Let the hype die down and pay the extra money so you have time to spend with family or doing something else that interests you rather than wasting time in a line for a gift.

I’m hoping that I can keep this trend up for a while so I don’t have to experience the craziness ever again.  Besides, if you buy Christmas gifts now, it just gives your loved ones more time to try and find it in your secret hiding place in the house.  Today is Cyber Monday so that means even more deals will be online.  At least I can agree with Cyber Monday, I don’t have to venture out of my home and I can just get everything I need delivered if its available online.  And if there is free shipping, thats even better all around!
