The iPad Air was released this past Friday and I went off to see it at my local Best Buy to see if I wanted to upgrade my iPad 2. There was only one display unit and I wasn’t able to even use it because there were too many people looking at it. However after seeing it I did decide that I didn’t want another full size iPad to carry around or work. Even if I was able to get my hands on the iPad Air, just looking at it reminded me of my iPad 2 and I already have an original iPad as well. I don’t think my household needs 3 9.7″ iPads.
Instead of getting an iPad Air, I’m definitely going to get an iPad Mini with Retina Display for myself and my wife. I think I’ll get my wife the 64GB space gray and I think I’ll get the 128GB space gray model. I currently have the 64GB iPad 2 and there isn’t enough space on t for all the stuff I watch while on the plane. I consider plane time me time so that means watching tons of movies that I don’t get to see while at home since I’m busy with things around the house and spending time with y family. I also have a lot more apps than my wife does and I suspect that my wife will need the 64GB to load some videos for my daughter to watch while we’re out.
The biggest dilemma that my wife and I have now is what kind of cases to get for our mini’s. I might use a combination iPad mini smart case with a Dodocase Book Back or I might go ahead and get the full smart case but it’s all leather and I kind of like the synthetic case that I have for my iPad 2. I did already buy the Steinheil Ultra Fine screen protectors so we won’t have fingerprints on the screen and hopefully those will be in this week. They’re definitely coming in faster than the screen protector I got for my iPhone 5s. Now my wife and I just need to decide what color cases we are going to get and from who. Hopefully we can find them on Amazon.com since my wife has a $50 gift card from trading in her Nexus 7. Now I just have to keep my eyes on the internet so I can see when they finally release the iPad Mini and hopefully I can use my Amex points and my $200 Apple gift card that I’m waiting for for my iPhone 4S trade in. That will definitely cut my personal cost of getting 2 iPad minis. Can’t wait!
Boo on Sunday I fell asleep on my couch and I accidentally pushed my iPad 2 off the couch and it fell to the floor. Most of the time this isn’t a big deal since I normally fall asleep upstairs where it’s carpeted. This time I fell asleep downstairs where there is a tile floor. Add to this that my iPad 2 doesn’t have a full cover like my original iPad does so its not nearly as well protected. It is however much lighter and better to hold but that means little when it hits the floor. The damage really isn’t that bad. I dented the corner of the case by the screen and rubbed off some paint. Now the edge near the top right corer doesn’t flow with the rest of therefore which kind of stinks and it is noticeable which stinks even more but there’s little one can do to fix it.
What I am glad about is that the screen didn’t crack. That would have been a total failure on my part and would have resulted in a $700 mistake. As it is, the functionality of my iPad 2 hasn’t been affected in any way. I just have to actively not stare at the corner that has the dent so wont be mad at myself for being so careless. Here’s hoping that when the iPad 4 (yes 4 not 3 because I’m going to skip a generation this time since both of my iPads work just fine for now and meet my needs) comes out there will be a decent protective case from Apple that will provide better protection from falls and the like. I guess ill need to start being more careful when I fall asleep on the couch and make sure that I put the iPad away on a table or something before dozing off.
Apple has just added a color choice for the new iPad 2. In addition to the traditional black, there is now white! I remember that there used to be a white iPhone that was supposed to be released but that hasn’t materialized yet but its rumored to be ready for the iPhone 5. The promise from Apple is that it will be available on day 1 of the release. Now I’m a little torn on what to get since I already have a “black” iPad with the iPad 1. Now here’s the rub on all this, the back is still alumnium, the only part that is actually white or black is the bezel and the home button at the bottom. I don’t know whether I should get black again or if I should go with white. If I get a white one, it will be distinct and people would know I have one of the new iPads. However, I can still get the black one and use one of the covers which only works with the new iPad anyway. Decisions decisions! I guess I’ll have to ponder this for a little bit longer and I’m sure I won’t make up my mind until I’m on the apple site at 5PM next friday putting in my order. I guess I’ll wait for the tear down to see what makes the iPad 2 tick.
This past Wednesday the new iPad 2 was announced with a lot of fanfare on the internet. I personally watched a live blog of the event to see what the new specs and stuff were. I gotta say that there isn’t a lot that I’m really excited about however I probably will get one since there are enough new features to almost justify the purchase. The big thing for me with this new iPad is FaceTime and the increased speed of the processor. It’s not like I had any issues with the current iPad’s processor, but just the thought of having more speed is enough for me to want one. The FaceTime aspect is something I really want so I can talk and see my family while I’m traveling on the road. Granted I’ll probably have an iPhone 5 too but if I want to see my family on a bigger screen, I think that would be totally killer.
The thing that makes the iDevices so good is the software. There is still plenty of software out there that I haven’t tried and the new apps like garage band and the iMovie app should be great for me to play around with. I’m hoping that iOS 5 will bring some major improvements so I don’t need as many jailbreak tweaks on my iPhone. That doesn’t mean I’m not going to jailbreak, it just means less apps from Cydia for me to install overall. I don’t think they’re ever going to do something like SBSettings which I use quite extensively but it would be nice if I didn’t have to use LockInfo to make the lock screen useful.
The new smart covers look pretty cool, I put a picture of them with a white iPad on this post just for fun. I think I’m going to get one of those like I got the case for my original iPad. The only area of concern is that it won’t protect the back of the device but I guess that means I have to be more careful about not dropping it. I think the real disappointment for me was that they didn’t increase the storage. I currently have 64GB now, I was kind of hoping for 128GB to store even more movies and pictures that I have. Other than that, the specs that have come out for the iPad 2 are just incrimental upgrades to the current iPad specs. I think the Android tablets will give the iPad a run for its money but they’re not yet up to par. I have to wait until next Friday before I can even order the device. I won’t be one of those suckers that stands outside and waits, I’m going to be smart and order it online and wait for my iPad 2 to come from China straight to my doorstep. I’m not selling my original iPad either, I’ll leave it here for my wife or future child to play with 🙂
